The Eastern Cape is one of the few Malaria free areas in South Africa. It is only a 2,5 hour drive by road from Port Elizabeth or 1 hour by light aircraft. Graaff-Reinet has a fully tarred, all weather airstrip. Graaff-Reinet is central to all Cape tourist routes. This is becoming a major emerging wildlife area. Graaff-Reinet is surrounded by the Karoo Nature Reserve, which has just been upgraded to National Park Status and is a mecca for birders, game watchers and students of flora (botany). There are over 220 bird species recorded in the area. Graaff-Reinet is of great historical interest because it's the 4th oldest town in South Africa. There are 250 National Monuments scattered through town. The museums boast collections of fossils, antique furniture, weapons, the Pierneef Johannesburg Station panels, contemporary art and historical photographs. Nieu-Bethesda with it's famous Owl House is a mere 50 km from town. Graaff-Reinet is 1 1/2 hours drive from the Greater Addo Elephant Park and an hours drive from the Mountain Zebra National Park near Cradock Tennis, bowls, clay pigeon shooting, horse-riding, mountain trails, squash, microlighting & paragliding all catered for in the area. There is an excellent 9-hole golf course close to town and visitors are welcome. Graaff-Reinet is known for its healthy climate and its friendly caring community.
